The Weekly Hook - How it all began...
Sometimes when you start a business it doesn't always go in the direction that you originally planned on. This is definitely the case with with my first venture into the business world. Steelheaders West opened it's doors in 2003. Success came early with a phenomanal Fall fishery and and even better Springer season.
At that time the tackle shop was located in front of the local newspaper facility (The Springfield News). When they approached me with the idea of having my own column I was more then happy to oblige. A strong following soon developed with the weekly report - which of course was dubbed "The Weekly Hook". Springfield News, unfortunately, shut it's doors nearly a year later due to a merger - and with it, so went the weekly report.
With readers of the weekly report complaining that they no longer had something to rely on and a customer base that was skyrocketing - I had to find a way to stay in touch with my customers and do it on a small business budget. Following the footsteps of numerous shops I decided to start emailing a newsletter out to all of my valued customers. Since having a background in graphic arts and desktop publishing I went to work and developed the Weekly Hook online edition.
The downside was soon to come - starting in 2005 and continuing to this current date the Salmon Fisheries, Fall and Spring, have all been nearly decimated - and they continue to decline. Unfortunately I was forced to close "Steelheaders West" in March of 2008.
Upon hearing about the closure there was a very strong request to continue doing the weekly fishing report. Since I was continuing to keep the bait delivery alive I decided that continuing the weekly fishing report was a viable option. Thus, The Weekly Hook was officially on it's own and will continue to improve and get bigger. Expansion is coming soon - first step is to go beyond the Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon. The Weekly Hook will be soon covering the entire State of Oregon - with Washington and Northern California in it's sights. The online version will be soon updated and ready for it's members - with one of the best fishing sites on the West Coast!
